Portland Thorns announced that United States women's national team forward Sophia Smith has signed a new contract, making her the highest-paid player annually in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Smith's deal with the Thorns extends through the 2025 season, with an option to further extend it through 2026.
Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NWSL Draft, has been a standout player for the Thorns, scoring 34 regular-season goals since joining the team. She became the youngest player in league history to win the MVP award in 2022 and the Golden Boot in 2023.
