Sons of Sparta launches today, God of War trilogy remaster confirmed in development

Santa Monica and Kratos are going back to where it all began with a shadowdrop of God of War: Sons of Sparta, launching today, taking players to a time before Olympus fell and long before the Ghost of Sparta became a father in the Norse saga. And alongside the new release, a God of War trilogy remaster has been confirmed to be in active development.

Set during the brutal years of Spartan training, God of War: Sons of Sparta follows a young Kratos and his brother Deimos as they endure relentless trials designed to forge them into soldiers defined by duty and honour. When a fellow soldier mysteriously disappears, the brothers set out on a dangerous journey to find him, testing not just their strength, but their bond.

Developed by Mega Cat Studios, the game embraces pixel art aesthetics while retaining the scale and emotional weight fans expect from a God of War story. It offers an untold canon chapter in Kratos’ early life, focusing on brotherhood, loyalty, and the harsh discipline that shaped the warrior he would become.

The new entry presents a vibrant 2D action-adventure experience, blending classic retro design with the franchise’s signature spectacle. Players will guide Kratos and Deimos through varied side-scrolling levels filled with environmental puzzles, mythological enemies, and towering bosses inspired by Greek legend.

In March 2005, God of War first launched on the PlayStation 2 and introduced players to Kratos, a rage-fueled Spartan whose quest for vengeance would reshape ancient Greece and eventually gaming itself. As the franchise nears the final month of its 20th anniversary celebrations in March 2026, Sony is closing the milestone year with a major announcement.

A remastered collection of the original Greek saga trilogy is officially in development, setting the stage for both longtime fans and newcomers to revisit Kratos’ rise to godhood. New players can experience Kratos’ origins for the first time, while longtime fans who grew up during the PlayStation 2/3 era get a faithful return to the saga that shaped modern action games.

With Sons of Sparta now available and the original trilogy remake on the horizon, this marks a defining moment for the franchise. While details on platforms and a release window for the remaster have yet to be shared, its confirmation signals a renewed focus on the franchise’s roots. It feels like both a celebration and a closing chapter.

If this truly serves as the final revisit to Kratos’ Greek era, it neatly ties a bow on the story that began more than 20 years ago. And with the trilogy being rebuilt for a new generation, the path forward seems clearer than ever.

Rumors of a new setting, possibly drawing from Egyptian mythology, no longer feel far-fetched. With the sands of a new pantheon waiting, Kratos’ next journey could take him into entirely uncharted territory.
