Sonia teases massive Eurovision plans and gives Mae Muller her stamp of approval

Eurovision Song Contest legend Sonia Evans teased exciting plans for 2023 and weighed in on the contest's most recent representatives.

The Liverpool-born singer-songwriter and overall powerhouse of talent was already a household name long before Eurovision came knocking. Based on her string of hits and stage presence, the BBC personally requested she enter the 1993 contest as the United Kingdom's representative.

She knocked it out of the park with the track, Better The Devil You Know, scoring her second place on the leaderboard and a lifetime in local and European fans' hearts.

Mae Muller carries Sonia's torch on the 30th anniversary with her own track, I Wrote A Song. It's a catchy pop anthem that acts as a middle finger to her ex-partner, adored by this year's fans. Not only is it deserving of twelve points from around the world, but Sonia herself is also quite a fan.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo on this year's entry, Sonia said: "She's young, she's fresh and I think the sound is of now because my daughter says she loves her music. I think she's got a pretty good chance and I think girls can relate to her. She's got my stamp of approval."

Offering Mae advice for after the contest, Sonia added: "The number of people that are watching you, you can get all shows all over Europe, which I did do and I travelled everywhere. It gives you a massive platform and everybody knows who you are. So you've got to strike while the iron is hot. You really do."

Sam Ryder's phenomenal performance in Turin last year woke a Eurovision renaissance among British fans which Sonia thinks is here to stay. She said: "For a while, because we did so bad, it was kind of like 'Oh, we're gonna come last again or at the bottom of the board,' and it really was like that for quite a few years.

"Then along comes Sam like a breath of fresh air with a brilliant voice and a great song. A great performer. He's a fantastic figure because he's so encouraging to other artists as well. Everything we have now, Sam did it for us and fingers crossed it never leaves again."

The Culture Liverpool team have put together a never before seen cultural festival around the contest with the scale of the programme described as "unprecedented." Though Sonia wasn't lucky enough to bring Eurovision home to Liverpool in 1994, the year after she entered, the city has delivered on everything she hoped they would given the chance.

She said: "To be honest with you, in 1994, I'm not too sure where they would have held it! I'm sure we would have found somewhere but the buzz and the hype would've been the same. I think everybody would have pulled out all the stops in the way that we're doing now. I'm so proud."

The EuroVillage and EuroClub lineups are filled with European stars already but Sonia is suspiciously missing from their lists. Fans need not worry because the star has even bigger fish to fry.

Teasing massive news yet to come, Sonia said: "I can't say too much but it's going to be amazing. I mean, I'm involved in so many things, massive things, but I can tell you that I'm in Hollyoaks, which I've already done.

"I've got a big cameo in that but I'm playing myself and we filmed in the EuroVillage so I enjoyed that. That's one thing I can tell you about.

"For everything else our lips are sealed but you're gonna see me everywhere."
