Son tried to kill his mum by stabbing her four times in the stomach

A man today admitted trying to murder his mum at their home in Melling.

Andrew Williamson, a civil engineer, pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to attempting to murder Barbara Williamson, who was 73 at the time. He launched the attack on the retired paediatrician in their home in Weavers Lane on April 20 last year.

Williamson, 40, had stabbed his mum four times in the stomach in an attempt to kill her. He appeared at court via video link from The Spinney, a secure mental health hospital in Atherton, Manchester. Defence barrister Christopher Stables told the judge that the defendant has been diagnosed with relapsing paranoid schizophrenia.

A psychiatrist who is treating Williamson said that they believe the most appropriate sentence will be a hospital order, Mr Stables told the court. After hearing the defence plea, Judge Stuart Driver, QC, further remanded Williamson on bail on “the strict condition” he remains at the hospital.

He also ordered the preparation of two psychiatric reports for sentencing. The judge adjourned sentence until July 15. Warning the defendant, he said: "One of the things the court will consider is a hospital order but all sentencing options remain open. The court is giving no indication of sentence."
