Son of Michigan Legend Resigns Days After Hire Amid Backlash Over Insensitive Social Media Activity

Michigan Athletics released a statement Saturday in which it announced that assistant director of football recruiting Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler resigned from his role just days after his hire was announced by the program.

“Effective this afternoon, Shemy Schembechler has resigned his position with Michigan Football. We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the University’s and Athletic Department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” said the statement, which was signed by Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and football coach Jim Harbaugh.

Schembechler’s resignation comes after his Twitter account was seen “liking” racist tweets. The account had reportedly been removing previous “likes” but has since been deactivated

Shemy is the son of legendary former Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler, who coached from 1969 to ‘89 and won 13 Big Ten championships. Shemy had previously worked for the program as a graduate assistant back in 1993. He most recently worked as a scout for the NFL’s Raiders, and had announced his return to the program on Wednesday.
