Son 'chased mother on scooter before stabbing her to death in street' in Willesden

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court accused of chasing and fatally stabbing his mother in the back in front of bus passengers.

Najiib Raytaan, 25, allegedly murdered 50-year-old Amaal Raytaan after she visited his home in Willesden, north-west London, on the afternoon of January 31.

Soon after arriving, she allegedly ran out and banged on neighbours' doors, pursued by her son on an e-scooter and holding a large knife.

Emergency services received multiple 999 calls after the driver of a bus and passengers allegedly saw her being stabbed in the back at around 4pm on Pound Lane, Willesden.

Officers attended alongside colleagues from the London Ambulance Service and found the victim suffering from stab wounds.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.34pm.

The defendant had fled on the e-scooter and was arrested at around 8am after returning to his flat in Harlesden Road, the Old Bailey was told.

He was charged on Monday with murder and possession of a bladed article in public.

On Wednesday, Raytaan appeared in court before Judge Nigel Lickley KC for a hearing to set a timetable for the case.

The judge set a plea hearing on April 22 and a provisional trial either on August 3 in Winchester Crown Court or on October 5 at the Old Bailey.

Raytaan, wearing a grey sweater, spoke to confirm his identity and was remanded into custody.

Members of the Raytaan family attended court supported by specialist officers.

The Metropolitan Police has not released the identity of the victim, who is named on court documents outlining the charges.

She was referred to as the defendant's mother by prosecutor Nadeem Holland during the hearing.
