Someone Check On The Gaylors Because They’ve Just Been Absolutely Roasted By SNL

This week, a specific yet very vocal group of Taylor Swift fans were the subject of a sketch on the American comedy show Saturday Night Live. Honestly, I’m impressed that SNL was able to tap into such a niche, predominantly online avenue of the zeitgeist.

The Gaylors — AKA people who staunchly believe that Taylor Swift is secretly queer and hinting at her hidden sexuality through music, videos and social media — have been peddling their hypothesis since the mid-2010s. Despite Swift debunking this theory in her prologue for her album 1989: Taylor’s Version in 2023, the Gaylor’s persist.

In a sketch on the latest episode of SNL, cast member Jane Wickline took to her electric keyboard to sing a little ditty from the perspective of Sabrina Carpenter, questioning why the gay theorising happens to Taylor and not other artists like… Sabrina Carpenter — and honestly, she makes a damn good point.

Let me share some of the lyrics with you.

“Taylor Swift sings about a crush on a best friend and you all cry ‘lesbian’ because she didn’t preface it with ‘my boy best friend’. In a music video, I make out with Jenna Ortega. No one doubts me at all when I say that it is a metaphor for one of my ex-boyfriends” and that is what it was,” Wickline sings.

She goes on to use a couple of other examples, such as how Ariana Grande was accused of queerbaiting after kissing a gal in the “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” video, and how one time Harry Styles wore rainbow pants and the internet erupted into screams of “he’s GAY”.

“Help me please just tell me where I’m going wrong. Why am I the only straight pop star taken at their word?” Wickline continues in song.

“It’s lonely, I do gay stuff and you don’t get mad. I just want the same treatment, I want to have mystique. Why don’t you think I’m even bi or pretending that I might be? I’m not bi or pretending but why does no one think I’m lying? I just want you to think I have secrets.”

It’s low-key giving Marina and the Diamonds in her Family Jewels era. Don’t believe me? Check out below.

Although most people understood this was a joke about the Gaylor fandom, on X (formerly Twitter), the fandom itself did not get the joke.

I think we can all agree that at one point, the Gaylor theories were extremely compelling and a bit of fun. However, now that Miss Thing has straight-up denied the rumours that she’s a bit fruity, I think it’s about time we let sleeping dogs lie.

For a full rundown on where the rumours started, and why Taylor had to debunk them, you can check out our extremely comprehensive explainer HERE. You can watch the entire Saturday Night Live episode on BINGE.
