The cost of living squeeze is getting tighter as tea has now become more expensive, according to new research.
Many top brands are creeping up in price on the shelves, with global supply and demand as well as changing access to materials being main causes, reports the Mirror.
Tetley, Twinings and Pukka have all increased prices over the past few weeks according to a deep dive by trade magazine The Grocer. The price hikes seem to be affecting products at each of the Big Four supermarkets; Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
In some cases tea has risen by as much as 75p per box over the eight weeks when data was analysed. It was found that Twinings’ Everyday Tea Bags have gone up from £5.25 to £6 for a 100g box.
Meanwhile, Pukka prices have risen 30p from £3 to £3.30 for a pack of 40 teabags.
Tetley products were found to have risen by between 10p and 20p. Fiachra Moloney, UK and Ireland general manager at Pukka owner Ekatera, said the cost to produce Pukka teas has risen "significantly" due to global supply and demand changes.
A spokesperson from Tetley said it is also dealing with "rising costs across the board, from raw materials to shipping and packing".
Twinings did not respond to a request for comment by The Grocer.
The consumer prices index (CPI) measure of inflation is used to explain how much the prices of everyday essentials have increased. When inflation rises, it means that your money doesn’t go as far as it used to.
For example, if something cost £1 a year ago and the rate of inflation is 9.4 percent, it would cost roughly £1.09 today.
