'Some fans are going to be unhappy' - Former Man City defender turns back on boyhood club by choosing Liverpool

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has backed Liverpool to win the Premier League next season ahead of his boyhood club.

The Reds kick off their 2022/2023 campaign this Saturday when they face Fulham, and all eyes are set on another scintillating two-horse race for the title. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have done toe-to-toe for the past five seasons and were separated by just a single point last season as City won on the final day against Aston Villa.

Big-money signings have come through the door at Anfield and the Etihad, with Liverpool spending an initial £64million on Darwin Nunez just two days before City activated Erling Haaland’s £51million release clause. The superiority of the two Premier League titans over the last five seasons, coupled with huge summers on both ends, has set the scene for another memorable title race.

But when speaking to ESPN , former City defender Onuoha was prompted to explain himself after a graphic showing his season’s predictions backed Liverpool to win the title.

“With the Liverpool and Manchester City thing for the Premier League title, it does feel like they are far and away the two sides closest to winning it,” said Onuoha. “But it’s always a toss up, it’s by a point. Or just maybe a bit more than that. I think, at this moment time, the players that have come in at Man City and the ones that have left.

“I think for Liverpool, as I saw on Saturday, it almost feels like it’s the same old Liverpool. It felt exactly the same. For Man City, searching for that maybe something different, perhaps it means they won’t hit the ground running in the way they need to be really competitive all the way throughout.

“Again, it’s a toss-up. I could have said Man City or Liverpool, neither will be a surprise – Some Man City fans are going to be unhappy with me.”

Onuoha also tipped Reds defender Virgil van Dijk to be the Player of the Year on the way to helping Liverpool to the title, with Tottenham striker Harry Kane predicted to win the Golden Boot.
