'Solidarity gathering' to take place in Stoneybatter to welcome refugees and newcomers

A new community group is holding a 'solidarity gathering' event in Stoneybatter on Sunday.

According to organisers from the Dublin 7 For All group, the event is on from 2pm to 5pm in front of Kavanagh's Pub at the Triangle, and the gathering aims to extend a "warm welcome" to all who live in the area, whether newcomers, refugees or long-established residents. At the event, there will be music, family-friendly games and face-painting, and a festive atmosphere, with food and hot beverages like coffee also available.

A spokesperson for Dublin 7 for All, which is a hundred-strong group, told Dublin Live: "Dublin 7 for All is a large and growing group of people living in Dublin 7 who want everyone who lives here to know that they belong and they are welcome."

A second representative from the group added that they want to "build community" in the Stoneybatter area. They said: "There have been recent protests staged locally, which we see as driven partly by a fear-based response to the housing crisis, and partly by a fear of the unknown.

"The answer is to work together to build community! Ireland is famous as the land of ‘a hundred thousand welcomes’, and Irish people are welcomed and made feel at home all over the world.

"We in Dublin 7 for All want to live up to our proud history and experience, in an Ireland that’s welcoming to everyone: wherever they may be from, and for whatever reason now find themselves making Ireland - and in particular Dublin 7 - their home," they added.

Dublin 7 For All aims to continue to grow, and to organise many more community events and to extend the hand of friendship to all Dublin 7 residents.
