The 2024 Solheim Cup offered a thrilling final day with the Sunday singles session at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, with the US winning 15.5 to 12.5 to take the trophy for the first time since 2017.
That came after the Europeans Team gave the hosts a scare whe the USA had gone into the fifth and final session with a 10-6 lead after the first 16 matches.
As the holders, Suzann Pettersen's Europeans needed to reach 14 points to take the title for the fourth successive edition, but to do so it would have required an effort not dissimilar to the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history, when, in 2015, the US came back from a 10-6 deficit heading into the Sunday singles to win 14.5-13.5.
Despite the daunting nature of the task, the Europeans went about their task well, with Charley Hull setting the early tone with a convincing 6&4 win over Nelly Korda.
The hosts were far from on the back foot, though, and the team responded with victories for Megan Khang over Emily Pedersen, Allisen Corpuz over Anna Nordqvist and Rose Zhang over Carlota Ciganda to take the nation to within 1.5 points of victory.
The Europeans, meanwhile, kept their hopes alive helped by Georgia Hall's victory over Alison Lee to move to within six points of the title.
Then things got even more interesting as the red that dominated most of the rest of the leaderboard turned increasingly blue. However, Andrea Lee then tied her match with Esther Henseleit take the US to 13.5 points - one from victory with Europe still needing 5.5.
They pulled one back when Celine Boutier holed her putt on the 18th the beat Lexi Thompson, taking Pettersen's team to 9.5 with five matches ongoing. That became 10.5 points when Leona Maguire beat Ally Ewing 4&3.
However, when Maja Stark put too much on a long putt against Lauren Coughlin, it left the American a birdie chance to win the Solheim Cup. She missed, but Stark needed to make the next putt to tie the match and delay the title heading back to the US for the first time in seven years. She came up clutch and on we went, now with the US needing 0.5 and Europe three points.
Was it delaying the inevitable? The answer was yes. Abane Valenzuela's long birdie putt to win her match against Lilia Vu came up just short, and the American made no mistake with her birdie putt on the 18th to tie the match and get the US to the all-important 14.5 points to reclaim the trophy.
With two matches left, one was won by Jennifer Kupcho over Linn Grant and the other saw Madelene Sagstrom beat Sarah Schmelzel to leave a final score of 15.5-12.5 to Team USA.
