Soldier Showdown 8 brings Warzone and Fortnite competition to U.S. Army soldiers worldwide

Eight years in, the U.S. Army’s premier esports program is back with a bang — and this time it’s got one of gaming’s biggest media companies behind it.

GameSquare (NASDAQ: GAME), the digital media company and parent organization of FaZe Esports, has partnered with the U.S. Army Installation Management Command to produce Soldier Showdown 8 (SS8). Presented by military financial services provider USAA, the tournament series, which is one of the most popular competitive gaming programs within the armed forces, is now entering its eighth consecutive year. For seven years, it fostered community spirit among military members and aims to continue doing so.

Registration opens on June 25, 2026. Online play starts in July and continues until October before the top performers head to a live finals event at FaZe Esports HQ at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

What soldiers are actually competing in

SS8 centers on two battle royale titles: Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, with soldiers competing in h2h tournaments in a bid to prove they’re the top dogs in their units. The format is open to active-duty Army National Guard and U.S. Army personnel, as well as Reserve members. Any US military members assigned on Army joint bases worldwide are also welcome to register and compete, which gives the competition a sizable pool of potential talent. The competition is partly about securing bragging rights and partly about grabbing some cool prizes.

Weekly matchups throughout the online qualifying stages will be streamed live on the Army Entertainment Twitch channel. Prize support comes from the Exchange, the military’s retail agency.

The tournament is produced in partnership with the U.S. Army MWR, which integrates SS8 into the Army’s broader recreational support framework for soldiers and their families.

Why GameSquare is the right fit here

GameSquare brings a full production infrastructure to a program that has historically run as a grassroots military initiative. Hosting the live finals at FaZe Esports HQ positions SS8 inside one of the more prominent esports venues in North America is a meaningful upgrade for a tournament that’s spent seven years building credibility on limited resources.

GameSquare CEO Justin Kenna said, “Soldier Showdown has spent seven years proving that gaming is one of the most powerful tools we have for building bonds among the men and women who serve. We’re proud to be producing this program and hosting it from our world class esports facility in Frisco, Texas. We can’t wait to crown the best Warzone and Fortnite players in the U.S. Army and bring the event to even more soldiers this year.”

Tim Hockenberry, the U.S. Army BOSS Program Manager echoed that enthusiasm. “Gaming has always been a powerful way for soldiers to connect, compete, and build lasting bonds beyond the battlefield,” he said. “Soldier Showdown has become a highlight of the year for so many of our soldiers. Heading into our eighth edition the enthusiasm is stronger than ever.”

What this partnership signals for military esports

The deal suits both parties’ interests. For GameSquare, Soldier Showdown gives it a mission-driven activation that speaks directly to a demographic (military personnel) with strong brand loyalty and consistent engagement habits. USAA’s presenting sponsorship adds a financial services layer that fits naturally, given its exclusive focus on serving military members and their families.

For the Army, GameSquare’s involvement means better production quality and corporate infrastructure at a time when military esports programs are competing for relevance alongside growing civilian alternatives. The program’s integration with MWR also ensures it isn’t siloed as a standalone event. Instead, it sits inside the Army’s existing lifestyle and recreational programming, which means more reach across both domestic bases and international postings.

The bigger picture for GameSquare

For a company that also holds FaZe Esports and operates one of the larger gaming media networks in North America, Soldier Showdown 8 adds an institutional client to GameSquare’s portfolio that’s genuinely different from its usual brand-facing work. The U.S. Army is a long-term partner by nature — programs like this don’t run for eight years without structural commitment — which gives GameSquare a recurring production contract with real community impact attached to it.

The live finals at The Star in Frisco also function as a showcase for FaZe’s physical venue, demonstrating the facility’s capacity to host events beyond the traditional esports calendar.

Soldier Showdown 8 registration opens June 25. Competitive online qualifiers run through October, with the live finals date at The Star to be confirmed as the season progresses.
