Ferocious solar winds will batter the Earth today after a 'hole' opened up on the Sun and ejected material into our path. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has raised an alert that a G1 class storm is heading towards the planet.
The high-speed winds could cause power grid failures, disrupt satellites and disrupt the migrations of animals. This phenomenon is the result of 'gaseous material flowing from a southern hole in the Sun’s atmosphere', according to Spaceweather.com.
Such holes appear as dark areas in extreme ultraviolet and X-ray images and are regions where the Sun’s plasma is cooler and less dense than that surrounding it thanks to the star’s magnetic field extending out into space as an open field, reports The Express.
