- Brian Farmer, the first journalist to interview Ian Huntley after the disappearance of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in August 2002, has revealed why he reported the killer to the police.
- Farmer interviewed Huntley, a school caretaker, and his partner Maxine Carr, a teaching assistant, who were the last known people to see the 10-year-old girls.
- He became suspicious when Huntley's account of the girls not noticing his dog seemed implausible, and when Huntley answered a question about how the girls would react to stranger danger, despite not knowing them.
- After consulting his brother, a retired senior detective, Farmer contacted Cambridgeshire Police to share his concerns about Huntley's statements.
- Huntley and Carr were arrested on 17 August 2002; Huntley was subsequently convicted of the murders, while Carr was jailed for perverting the course of justice after providing a false alibi.
