Model Sofia Richie Grainge has revealed she spoke to sister Nicole Richie about the perils of being famous before embarking on life in the public eye.
In a new interview with PORTER, the star said she learned that “not everything needs to be shared” from her sibling.
The influencer and designer is the sister of socialite Nicole Richie, who shot to fame in the early 2000s alongside her friend Paris Hilton in a series of reality shows.
The sisters are the daughters of legendary singer Lionel Richie and his wife Diane Alexander.
Speaking to the publication, Richie Grainge said watching her sister’s fame at a young age made her cautious about being a celebrity herself – adding she has often asked her older sibling for advice about being famous.
The 25-year-old said she considered: “This is a reputation I’m going to have [for a long time]. Let me go to my older sister, who’s gone down this road, and pick her brain for advice.
“She’s such a veteran, she’s really gone through it all. She reminds me that not everything needs to be shared; things can be private just for you”.
She said her father also taught her that: “Just because you are in a public industry, doesn’t mean your whole life needs to be public.”
Speaking more generally about her childhood and her sister’s fame, Richie Grainge added: “I had my normal childhood life… but if I were to step outside... I had that understanding of the big picture: my dad’s this mega star, my sister [Nicole Richie] is this TV star.
“They [Nicole and Paris] were humongous… as a kid, I had a general awareness of how obsessed people were with them.”
The model, who started in the industry aged 14 as a cover star of Teen Vogue, has been romantically linked to Justin Bieber and Scott Disick in the past. This year, she married music executive Elliot Grainge.
Speaking about walking down the aisle with her father during the couple’s ceremony in the south of France in spring 2023, she said: “We were giggling, crying, it was so surreal”.
