The dining room has been a place for formal use for centuries, yet these rooms are often left unloved or underappreciated. However, decorated beautifully, a dining room should have a special ambiance, whether for cozy lunches, elegant dinner parties, or working from home. In our opinion, their design and decoration should be as timeless and well-considered as any other room in the home.
American media personality and model, Sofia Richie Grainge's is no stranger to elegant, transitional design. Riche Grainge has become somewhat of a poster girl for the 'quiet luxury' movement. She even admitted that she put in a lot of effort to make her wedding look 'effortlessly luxe', and the same can be said for her timeless dining room. But there is one other interior design trend that caught our attention – curves. The use of curvaceous design elements truly steals the show in this sophisticated space.
Learning how to use curves in interior design will add dynamism, flow, and fluidity to a once-formal or stuffy space. After all, isn't it about time we had some fun when designing a dining room?
Using curved lines within a home offers a wealth of benefits, including the potential to add both flow and dynamism.
'Curves work equally as well in a traditional setting as in a contemporary scheme, though I find the style works best when you include a mix of classic furniture alongside modern, curved elements,' says founder and director, Elicyon, Charu Gandhi. 'Hard, more formal lines juxtaposed with soft curves tend to work well in a dining space.'
'My favorite fabrics to use when working with curved furniture are textured woven fabrics and bouclé. It’s paramount to get the padding just right to avoid any puckering. If you are working with a furniture maker or upholsterer, they’ll be able to advise on the best fabrics for your piece.'
For smaller spaces, curved furniture can help to soften the room and extend the eye line, whereas, in larger spaces, big sweeping curves create cozy, cocooning, warm moments.
If curved dining room furniture feels a step too far, it can be fun to experiment with accessories and furnishings that incorporate a curved edge or pattern. Scalloped trims on rugs and throw pillows are a great way to add some softer lines into a living space and also give you a chance to experiment with splashes of color or pattern on the trim. Alternatively, curves through artwork can be replaced easily as the seasons, and trends, shift.
