Thousands of Irish students are set to receive a €5,000 payment from the government to give them a hand with education costs.
The bursary scheme launched two years ago and this week, Tusla, the child and family agency announced that applications have reopened for 2022/2023.
Starting out in a career can be a challenging time for students, and so this payment provides a boost for those over 18 to help them achieve their goals.
If you are a care-experienced student who is not in receipt of any other financial support for education from a State source, you can apply for the grant of up to €5,000 to fund a third-level course or to purchase necessary materials or hardware.
A care experienced person is anyone who, at any stage of their life, and for any length of time, has been in care - looked after by the local authority.
A total of €750,000 of Dormant Accounts funding was secured in 2022 by Tusla to provide educational supports for children in care and young people in aftercare.
Speaking about the scheme, Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman said: “I am delighted to support the launch of the Education and Training Bursary Scheme 2022-2023.
“While there are very strong supports for formal third-level courses, this scheme is to address the need for supports for other, often shorter courses, which are part of the incremental steps for young people building their careers.
“In such instances, this bursary scheme will be of real practical benefit and will improve access to educational opportunities.”
