Social welfare Ireland: Double child benefit on cards for spring cost of living package

An additional child benefit payment, an energy rebate and a fuel allowance sum will likely feature in the upcoming cost of living package.

The government is expected to sign off on plans for the double child benefit payment. Similar child friendly measures have recently come into effect, including a reduction on childcare costs introduced at the beginning of this year.

However, the rollout of double child benefit would likely cost €200 million to implement. It is likely that other supports would have to be scrapped in order to support this measure.

The Irish Examiner reports that a further once off welfare payment is also under consideration. However, motorists will be dealt a blow as fuel supports will be phased out between now and the next budget.

Cuts of 20c and 15c were applied to petrol and diesel prices introduced in March 2022 in order to combat skyrocketing energy costs. However, the fuel allowance itself will likely be safeguarded.

The government are considering expanding eligibility for the fuel allowance ahead of the implementation of the cost of living packages. People aged 70 or older or those receiving long-term social welfare payments are eligible for the payment.
