Social Security’s 2027 Changes Include a Bigger Tax Bill — Here’s Who Could Pay $484 More

2027 Social Security tax increase
Social Security’s taxable earnings ceiling rises to $192,300 in 2027, potentially increasing annual employee payroll taxes by $483.60 for workers earning at least that amount. Self-employed individuals could face a larger increase because they generally pay both portions of the tax. Julia Zavalishina/Shutterstock

Millions of Americans are preparing for bigger Social Security checks in 2027, but there’s another change that could take nearly $484 more out of some workers’ paychecks. While retirees are getting a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment, higher-income Americans will see more of their earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes. The change could also affect people who continue working well into their retirement years.

According to the Social Security Administration’s official 2027 fact sheet, the maximum earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 in 2026 to $192,300 in 2027. That $7,800 increase translates into an additional $483.60 in annual Social Security taxes for employees earning at least the new maximum. Here’s how the 2027 Social Security tax increase works and who should prepare for a bigger deduction.
