Social Security Benefit Increase 2027: What to know about the next COLA

Social Security beneficiaries are waiting for the next yearly cost-of-living adjustment, which determines how much their monthly payments will change. The 2027 increase has not yet been officially revealed, but the recent estimate points to a possibly larger adjustment than recipients have watched in recent years.

When Will the 2027 Social Security COLA Be Announced?

The Social Security Administration is set to announce the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment on October 14. The revelation will follow the Bureau of Labor Statistics' release of September's Consumer Price Index, or CPI.

September's figure is the final piece required for calculating the average annual change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, called the CPI-W.

The calculation compares the average CPI-W readings for July, August and September of the current year with the corresponding three-month duration from the earlier year.

What Is the Latest 2027 COLA Estimate?

The Senior Citizen League, an advocacy organization, now estimates that the 2027 Social Security COLA might be 3.5%.

That projection is 0.1 percentage points lower than the group's earlier estimate. Even so, a 3.5% adjustment would be more than the 2.8% increase for 2026 and the 2.5% adjustment for 2025.

What Could a 3.5% Increase Mean for Monthly Benefits?

If the 3.5% projection becomes the actual COLA, the average Social Security payment would rise by around $67.90 each month.

The current average monthly benefit is $1,940. Under a 3.5% adjustment, that amount would increase to almost $2,007.

Individual beneficiaries could watch various dollar increases because the amount of the adjustment relies on their existing benefit.

How Would the 2027 Increase Compare With Past COLAs?

If the 3.5% forecast becomes the official adjustment, it would rank 19th among the annual Social Security increases implemented since 1977.

The previous COLA, revealed in 2025 and applied in 2026, ranked 27th.

The largest adjustment in the history of Social Security COLAs was 14.3% in 1980. That was followed by an 11.2% increase in 1981 and a 9.9% adjustment in 1979.

By law, Social Security benefits cannot be reduced because of the COLA calculation. However, when inflation is flat, no COLA being applied.

What Happens Next?

The September CPI-W data will complete the details required for the 2027 COLA calculation. The Social Security Administration is set to announce the official adjustment on October 14.

Until that announcement, the 3.5% figure from The Senior Citizen League continues to be a projection rather than the final benefit increase. If the estimate is finally confirmed, the average monthly Social Security payment explained in the supplied information would rise from $1,940 to around $2,007.
