A British man fell to his death while climbing a Spanish bridge in an attempt to "create content" for social media, reported local authorities.
The 26-year-old man, who has not yet been identified to the public, was climbing the Castilla-La Mancha Bridge in the central city of Talavera de la Reina, the local mayor's office confirmed in a statement released on Sunday.
The man was accompanied by another British national, a 24-year-old man, when he fell. The two intended to create social media content, according to Sky News. He was not wearing safety equipment.
"We have been able to find out, they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social networks, which has resulted in this unfortunate and sad outcome," said city councilor Macarena Muñoz.
A climbing ban has long been imposed upon the bridge, which is 630 feet tall. The 26-year-old only made it about a quarter of the way up, roughly 40-50 meters, before plummeting to his death.
According to local sources, a driver passing by called emergency services following the incident.
"The other lad was in a state of shock initially and couldn't even speak. He's obviously still pretty traumatised but is not at the police station any longer," said a local source.
Muñoz also reiterated that climbing the bridge is an incredibly dangerous feat "which we have reiterated on many occasions cannot be done under any circumstances".
"We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain, and are in contact with the local authorities," said a Foreign Office spokesperson.
