Socceroos wizard Goodwin ready to unlock Indonesia

Socceroos winger Craig Goodwin is adamant he can provide the creative spark required to help unlock Indonesia's defence and a path to the Asian Cup quarter-finals.

Goodwin missed Australia's final group game against Uzbekistan with a knee knock but insisted he was ready to play at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium on Sunday.

Opta stats noted Goodwin still created more scoring chances (seven) and played more passes into the box (19) than any other player in the first round of the Asian Cup.

Australia have had to deal with deep-lying defences and Goodwin's lethal left foot can be the key to creating opportunities or putting set pieces on a platter for teammates to score.

"It's my job to bring it to the team being an attacking player," the 32-year-old said.

"But over the last probably two years, at club and international level as well, I've seen my role as being that real creator, whether it's from open play or from set pieces.

"I think I've done that in the large majority of the games that I've played and been a real outlet.

"Obviously it's been a little bit annoying to pick up the knock that I got. It's been about managing that to put myself back in contention for the team.

"But I know that whenever I'm on the pitch, I'll be able to create for the team at any moment."

Goodwin, notably, thumped home a wonderful penalty in the shootout against Peru that sealed qualification to the 2022 World Cup.

He was ready to lead the way again, or give tips to his younger teammates, if Sunday's game reached that point.

"As it comes to knockout football we'll be very prepared - and we did that already this week with penalties - or every scenario," he said.

"I hope it doesn't come to that point, but my advice to any player that's stepping up will be to go up there with confidence.

"We have a lot of young players that have a lot of confidence and who do take penalties at their club as well.

"Penalties aren't for everyone, they're definitely a nervous thing to do, especially in a big game.

"But it's about having that thought process that you're going to be the one to score the goal to put the nation through, rather than thinking that you're gonna miss."
