The holidays are much brighter this year for a Southern California mother and her young daughter after months of uncertainty and hardship. Kioka Hampton and her daughter, Paris, had been living out of their car following the death of Hampton’s grandmother, a loss that left the small family without stable housing.
With limited resources and few options, Hampton focused on keeping her daughter safe while searching for a way forward. That turning point came through the help of Holliday’s Helping Hands, a nonprofit dedicated to providing housing, job training, and support services to families in need. Just days before Christmas, the organization surprised Hampton and her daughter with something life-changing: a fully furnished apartment of their own, reports ABC7 Los Angeles.
The nonprofit didn’t just provide housing. The apartment was stocked and ready, complete with furniture, food, and holiday cheer. A Christmas tree stood inside, along with wrapped presents waiting to be opened. “She thinks that she’s walking into an empty apartment, just to check and see if they painted a couple of things, and so when she walks in … she’s going to be totally surprised,” said Holliday’s Helping Hands founder Katina Holliday ahead of the reveal.
“She’s going to walk into a refrigerator full of food, a stove, because she was waiting on somebody to donate a stove to her. We were able to purchase that as well, and a little Christmas cheer.” For Holliday, the gesture was about more than material items. It was about dignity, stability, and restoring hope after a difficult year.
“Paris, the baby, is deserving of it all, and so is the mom,” Holliday added. Beyond housing, Hampton is also receiving long-term support. She is currently enrolled in the nonprofit’s Certified Nursing Assistant program, which is designed to help participants gain skills, certifications, and access to steady employment.
Once Hampton completes her state exam, she plans to begin working in healthcare, a field that offers both job security and opportunities for advancement. For her, the program represents a path toward independence and a stable future for her daughter. The apartment, the job training, and the support services together mark a new chapter for the family.
After months spent living day to day, Hampton can now focus on building a career and providing a safe, permanent home for Paris. As the holiday season arrives, their story highlights how targeted community support can make an immediate and lasting difference. For one mother and daughter, the gift this year wasn’t just Christmas presents. It was the chance to start over.
