THE SNP’s national secretary has announced his intention to stand in the 2026 Holyrood election.
Alex Kerr, also an SNP councillor for Glasgow Baillieston, is seeking his party’s nomination for the newly established constituency of Glasgow Baillieston and Shettleston.
“This is my home. I’ve grown up here, worked here, and had the privilege of serving this community as your local councillor,” he said.
“Now, I’m asking for your support to take that work further – to be a strong voice for our area in the Scottish Parliament and to stand up for Scotland’s right to choose its own future.”
Kerr also stressed the broader challenges facing the country, saying that Westminster is “failing Scotland”.
“Time and time again, we see our democratic choices ignored, our economy held back, and our people forced to pay the price of decisions we didn’t vote for. It’s time we took our future into our own hands,” he said.
“This election isn’t just about who represents us in Holyrood, it’s about Scotland’s future. It’s about standing up to a Westminster Labour government which has broken election promise after promise and to ensure decisions affecting Scotland are made in Scotland, by the people who live and work here.”
Kerr added: “If you want a local champion, someone who knows our communities and will always put Scotland first, back me to be your SNP candidate.”
Nominations to stand as a candidate for the SNP in one of Holyrood’s 73 constituencies open on Monday for four weeks.
Meanwhile, councillor for Monifieth and Sidlaw Lloyd Melville has also announced a bid to be the SNP candidate for the Angus South constituency.
In a video posted on social media, he told of the need to “get out there into every community” and engage voters in the SNP’s plans for the future.
It comes after current MSP Graeme Dey announced his intention not to seek the nomination.
