SNP demand promised £200m for Grangemouth as hundreds of jobs at risk

THE SNP have demanded the UK Government urgently deliver £200 million of promised investment for Grangemouth after almost 400 more jobs were put at risk.

Chemical manufacturer Syngenta announced on Thursday that it is proposing to cease operations at its Grangemouth site, putting 377 jobs at risk.

The company have entered a formal consultation process with trade unions and employees, with no final decision yet made on the future of the site.

The announcement has renewed pressure on the UK Labour Government over £200m which was pledged for investment in Grangemouth through the National Wealth Fund in February 2025.

The SNP have said none of the money has yet been delivered, with Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn raising the issue earlier this week.

The UK Government announced the funding following the decision to end crude oil refining at the Petroineos refinery in Grangemouth, which resulted in hundreds of job losses.

The £200m was pledged for co-investment through the National Wealth Fund in projects intended to support the area's long-term industrial future.

Local SNP MSP Martyn Day has now demanded urgent action following the announcement from Syngenta.

He said: “My thoughts are with all the workers at Syngenta and their families at what is a hugely challenging time.

“We are clear that we firmly oppose this decision and during the consultation period we will continue to push bosses to reconsider their decision.

“People in Grangemouth rightly feel that they have been let down time and time again by this UK Labour Government. They came to power on a promise that they would save the refinery but then stood by and let the site die.

“They then promised £200 million in support for the area but nearly two years on and not a single penny has been delivered. In a further kick in the teeth the same Labour Party have found billions to save similar industrial jobs in England.

“With hundreds more jobs now at risk, kind words and more promises from Labour ministers won’t cut it. Grangemouth needs the money it was promised, and it needs it now.

“People in Grangemouth and across Scotland are fed up being treated as an afterthought by Westminster. With the fresh start of independence we can build a stronger and wealthier country anew, in which Scottish industry will play second fiddle to no one.”

Syngenta said that no final decision has been taken and said it would consider alternatives put forward during the consultation process.

The latest threat to jobs comes after crude oil refining ended at Grangemouth in 2025, with around 400 jobs affected.

The UK Government has been approached for comment.
