SNP chief Ian Blackford slams Celtic fans as 'sickening' for Queen protest banners

SNP chief Ian Blackford slams Celtic fans as 'sickening' for Queen protest banners

SNP chief Ian Blackford has slammed Celtic fans for their "sickening" Royal Family protest banners prior to the Queen's funeral.

Hoops fans unveiled a banner reading: "If you hate the Royal Family clap your hands" ahead of a minutes' applause in respect of the late monarch on Sunday against St Mirren.

It came a matter of days after a section of the Celtic support held up banners in Warsaw for a Champions League tie against Shakhtar Donetsk stating: "F*** the Crown".

Westminster leader Blackford has now condemned the actions of those protesting, insisting they're not acceptable.

He told Sky News: "Nobody wants to see things like that and people ought to be respectful for what was the death of the Queen. Not only the death of the Queen but a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother.

"You know, people ought to behave in a responsible manner, it simply isn't right and that is not something that we want to see..."

Burley then interrupted to say the Celtic fans had "put a lot of thought" into their childish display at Paisley's St Mirren Park and branded it "disrespectful".

Blackford replied: "It's sickening Kay and it's not something that anybody wants to see. We've spoken in the past about the lack of respect in our political discourse and when you see things like that it does show we've got some way to go. It needs to be called out and I absolutely unreservedly call it out this morning."
