Snow warnings for Scotland as 10cm of white stuff to fall across country

Parts of Scotland are expected to be hit with up to 10cm of snow on Christmas Day as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning.

The warning, which will come into place later this evening, covers the entire west coast of Scotland, and stretches from the Shetland Islands to parts of the borders. While some may be excited about the prospect of a white Christmas, the Met Office has warned that there could be disruptions on the road.

The yellow warning is also in place for ice, so Scots should keep a look out to ensure that they don't slip. Parts of the Highlands may additionally experience high winds, which could cause power outages on Monday.

Scots should prepare in advance for longer journey times, icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, and a very small chance of interruptions to power supplies.

Here is everything you need to know about the yellow warning.

Details of yellow warning

A yellow warning is in place (Met Office)

The Yellow warning will come into place at 9PM today and will last until 6PM tomorrow, Monday December 26.

The Met Office warning states: "Strengthening west-northwesterly winds will bring increasingly frequent wintry showers to parts of Scotland through Sunday night and into Monday morning. These may fall as snow to low levels for a time where temporary accumulations of 1-3 cm are possible, with 5-10 cm of snow over the hills.

"Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard, especially across parts of Western Scotland later in the night where showers will fall as rain or sleet. Snow showers will extend to central and southern parts of Scotland by Monday morning, although any lying snow will be confined to higher ground."
