Snow Northern Ireland: When the wintry conditions are set to hit as temperatures drop to -5

Don't put those thermals away just yet as Northern Ireland's weather front is forecast to be cold and icy this week.

A four-day weather warning for snow and ice has been issued by the Met Office, with driver's being urged to stay cautious on the roads.

The yellow alert will begin at 9pm tonight, Monday March 6, and will continue through to Tuesday. The second alert for "heavy snow" will be in place from 3am on Thursday, through to 6pm on Friday.

Both separate alerts are yellow warnings, the first is for "snow showers", whereas later in the week, the alert covers for "heavy snow".

Here is the full forecast for the week ahead, and details on snow fall times:

Monday, March 6

There will be clear periods this evening and a few scattered snow showers, giving a slight covering in places across the north. It will be a cold night with a widespread frost and minimum temperatures of around -4C.

Sunset is predicted to be at 6:09pm, which is around the time that temperatures begin to drop. It will get colder each hour until midnight, when the temperature will remain at 0C - the Met Office says it will feel more like -4C.

Snow showers could begin at 9pm, causing disruption to travel, it has been warned.

Tuesday, March 7

A Met Office spokesperson said it will be a cold and bright day tomorrow with "some sunny intervals and a few snow showers".

The snow shows will be mostly across northern counties. The maximum temperature will be 5C but that will drop to 2C with sunset.

As it nears Wednesday, temperatures will drop further. From 9pm it will be 0C. It might be a night for an electric blanket, or extra layers, as experts say it will feel like -5C.

Wednesday, March 8

Although there is now warning for snow, it will remain very cold. Temperatures will reach a high of 4C and lows of -1C.

Thursday, March 9

Parts of Northern Ireland will see the aftermath of snow showers on Thursday, with the Met Office forecasting hevay snow, mixed with sleet showers.

From early morning, at around 6am, there will be a "light snow" until 12 noon. Then at 3pm, there will be sleet, and snow again at 6pm.

On Thursday night, there will be more sleet at 9pm, with temperatures feeling like -2C.

Friday, March 10

The forecast for Friday shows the possibility of snow and rain showers, with a warning in place until late afternoon. Again, temperatures will fall below 0C.
