Snow causes widespread disruption across Co Tyrone as schools closed

Heavy snow closed a number of schools around Co Tyrone on Thursday as Storm Eunice arrived in the county.

A yellow weather warning for snow and lightning is in place across many parts of Northern Ireland and will remain in place until 8pm on Thursday.

The Tummery Road outside Dromore was also closed on Thursday morning following a two vehicle crash.

School bus services were also affected in many parts of the county, while at least a dozen schools are reported to have closed due to adverse weather conditions.

St Eugene’s Primary School in Victoria Bridge was one of those to take the decision in the interests of safety.

“A risk assessment has been carried out. I have consulted with our Vice-Chair of Governors & DE checklist. In the interests of the safety of pupils, families & staff we confirm we are unfortunately unable to open today,” the school said in a Facebook post.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause. We will reopen tomorrow.Take care and stay safe.”

Heavy snow has been captured across several different parts of Co Tyrone.

The Met Office said heavy snow showers were to be expected throughout the day.

"Frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a chance of frequent lightning affecting some places,” the Met Office said.

"Wintry showers continuing, some heavy snow showers in the west with isolated thunder, fresh accumulations.

“The showers turning to rain or sleet at lower levels later. Strong westerly winds, gales along the north coast. Maximum temperature 5C.

"Further showers this evening, some wintry on high ground with gales for a time. The showers slowly easing overnight with winds easing. Some icy patches. Minimum temperature 1C."

The Tummery Road in Dromore was closed on Thursday morning after a number of vehicles became stuck, leaving the road impassable.

"Due to weather conditions the Tummery Road, Dromore is impassable. Vehicles are currently stuck on the road. Road service are advised," the PSNI said.

"Police are diverting vehicles away from the area. Please seek alternative routes."

The Fermanagh and Omagh Policing and Community Safety Partnership urged caution for anyone who may need to use the roads on Thursday, and provided some tips on driving in snowy conditions.

"Many of us are waking up to a blanket of snow this morning take care if you have to go out on the roads this morning. Here is some advice from the RAC about how to drive in snow.

"Accelerate gently, use low revs and change up to a higher gear as quickly as possible.

"Move off in second gear as this will help reduce wheel slip - some cars have a winter mode, which does the same job – so to check whether your car has this function in the vehicle’s handbook."

Councils across the county have also said that in collections may not take place as usual on Thursday as a result of the snowy conditions.

Mid Ulster District Council said: "The poor weather and road conditions are affecting our bin collection service and many bins across Mid Ulster will not be emptied today.

"We plan to collect missed bins this Saturday (26 Feb), so if your bin is missed today, please leave it out by 7.30am on Saturday."
