Snooker legend Ken Doherty reveals he's split from his wife but pair remain friendly for son

Snooker star Ken Doherty has revealed that he has split up from his wife. The snooker legend is no longer with his wife Sarah but has said he remains on good terms with her for their son.

Ken, who won the 1997 World Snooker Championship, was married to Indian-born Sarah for 20 years. Their son, Christian is 14 years old.

Speaking to The Irish Mirror, Ken said: “It was an amicable split, we’d been together for 20 years and we’ve got a son together. We both love him very much and we’re both still friends. We still talk on the phone.”

Known as "The Pride of Dublin" Ken's love of snooker began when he was just a child, as his family home backed up onto the local snooker hall. He could hear the clack of the balls when he went to bed each night.

It was at the snooker hall that he bought his first cue. The warped cue was left behind by a customer and Ken bought it from the club for £2.

“I still have the £2 cue," he said. "I have had it for 40 years now. Nobody came back for it, it was put back on the pool rack.”

Ken and Stephen Hendry have both been given wild cards to compete for the next two years. They are both currently competing in the World Seniors in Sheffield.

His greatest sporting achievement was winning the 1997 World Snooker Championship. But he has revealed that despite winning the competition his mother still kept him humble by giving him chores to do.

He said: “My mother was a great baker and she used to bake apple tarts for the local Spar shop. There was one time that the manager was so busy he couldn’t come up for them.

“It was eight o’clock on a Saturday morning, I’d been out on Friday night, probably in Night Owls with the lads. It’s 1997 and I’m world champion. She shouts up ‘Kenneth, you got to take the apple tarts down to the local Spar’.

“She gave me a breadboard... there’s probably 12 or 14 apple tarts. I’m carrying them through the middle of Ranelagh at eight o’clock on a Saturday morning.

“People are beeping the horn saying ‘Doherty what are you doing?’ “Whether I was world champion or not I was still her son and I still had to do the chores."
