Snapchat responds as users ask how to remove 'annoying' new AI feature

Snapchat has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that is being rolled out to all users – but it hasn’t gone down well. The new My AI feature is an alternative to the ChatGPT chatbot and was initially launched for subscribers to the premium Snapchat+ service, but the photo sharing app has started to make it available for everyone.

But since its wider rollout, Snapchat’s app has been flooded with negative reviews on the App Store and Play Store amid a growing number of complaints from users, TechCrunch reported. Over the past week, Snapchat’s average US App Store review was 1.67, with 75 percent of reviews being one-star, according to data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

Many users are frustrated with the way the feature has been automatically added to their apps, as it currently sits pinned to the top of their Chat feed above their friends – and not everyone can remove it. Slamming My AI on Twitter, @lzzieeeee said: “Snapchat ai is the most useless thing I’ve ever come across.”

@yourbhabi asked: “How do we remove the Snapchat AI thing? It’s so annoying.”

@ASAP_Jungwoo added: “I hate Snapchat AI please at least let me not have it pinned. I don’t like it being the first chat I see. It’s awful.”

Scores of Snapchatters are calling for a way to remove My AI from their app, or at least a way to hide it. Here, we break down everything you need to know about Snapchat My AI and if it's possible to remove it.

What is Snapchat My AI?

Snapchat has billed My AI as “an experimental, friendly, chatbot” that is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology and allows users to have a conversation as if talking to a real person. According to Snapchat, My AI can do several things including answering trivia questions, offering advice, helping plan a hiking trip, or suggesting what to make for dinner.

Users can also give My AI a nickname and tell it about their likes and dislikes. My AI also learns about a user the more they interact with it, so its responses will become more relevant the more they talk to it.

Snapchat launched the new feature in February exclusively to paying subscribers of Snapchat+, but it has now begun rolling it out to users free-of-charge.

How to remove Snapchat My AI

My AI is automatically pinned to the top of Snapchat’s Chat feed, and currently the only way to remove it is if you pay for a subscription to Snapchat+, which costs £3.99 a month in the UK. Subscribers can unpin My AI from their Chat feed by going to their Snapchat+ management screen from their profile and toggling off ‘My AI’.

My AI can be completely removed for Snapchat+ subscribers by following these steps:

  • Swipe right from the Camera screen to go to the Chat screen
  • Press and hold on My AI
  • Tap ‘Chat Settings’
  • Tap ‘Clear from Chat Feed’

When asked about users' negative reactions to My AI, a Snapchat spokesperson said: “As we’ve been rolling out My AI, the vast majority of people with early access have been enjoying playing with it — sending millions of chat messages per day to learn more about movies, sports, pets, and the world around them. As with all AI powered chatbots, My AI is always learning and we’ve appreciated all the feedback so far from our passionate community, as we continue to improve the experience.”

On the ability to remove My AI, they added that users don't have to use the feature if they don’t want to.
