Snakes Around Your House? 6 Ways to Stop Them

Spotting a snake near the house is a frightening experience especially in areas close to gardens or water sources. In India snakes enter residential spaces not with the intention to attack but it is to find food or shelter with cool temperatures. The good news is that these snake encounters may be avoided by the following simple and harmless precautions.

Keep Your Surroundings Clean and Clutter Free

Clutter is favored by snakes since it gives them places to hide and shelter. Stacks of bricks, firewood, debris, old furniture and unused pots would make the best resting spots of snakes. It is important to clear the garden and the storage area regularly to eliminate hiding areas of snakes.

Control Rodents in Home

Food is one of the largest reasons why snakes enter into homes. Snakes are attracted by the presence of rodents such as rats and mice. Appropriate waste disposal, closed food storage and pest control minimize the rodents which indirectly keeps snakes away.

Keep the Garden in Top Condition

Snakes hide in overgrown grass, thick hedges as well as dense bushes. Keep lawns trimmed, bushes pruned and plants spaced out. Avoid letting leaf litter or compost piles build up near the house as they attract insects and rodents.

Seal Entry Points and Gaps

Snakes are able to squeeze through very small holes. Close openings in walls, openings under doors, drains, air vents and damaged mesh caps. The preventive measures needed are installing fineness wire mesh over the drains and ventilation openings.

Reduce Water Sources

Snakes are attracted to frogs and insects which are found in standing water. Repair dripping taps, empty containers and provide drainage in and around the house. Snakes are less attracted to dry surroundings because of the properties.

Use Natural Deterrents and Stay Alert

Powerful odorous oils such as neem oil, garlic spray or clove oil are applied as natural deterrents but this might not be effective all the time. More importantly, be keen in monsoon and summer seasons when there is high movement of snakes. In case you see a snake, maintain their distance and reach trained wildlife rescue specialists.

Snakes around the house are usually a sign of an environment that offers food, shelter or water. By making small changes to your surroundings and staying vigilant, you can significantly reduce the chances of snake encounters.
