Smash on A40 leaves hundreds stranded in the freezing cold amid ice and snow warnings

A double-decker bus and a lorry have collided near Aberdeen in Scotland in difficult driving conditions with ice and snow warnings in place.

Emergency services rushed to smash on the A90 by Castle of Fiddes, that took place around 5pm and it is unclear if there have been any casualties but so far no serious injuries have been reported.

The crash led to long delays with the A90 closed in both directions for three hours, while drifting snow has also made the route hazardous since it has reopened.

Gritters have been treating the road with one southbound lane reopened at around 8.30pm.

Firefighters from Stonehaven, Inverbervie and North Anderson arrived at the crash around 5.20pm and a spokesperson said that they helped ambulance services at the scene while using cutting equipment on the vehicles.

Met Office yellow warnings for snow and ice are in place for parts of Scotland until Friday with warnings of travel disruption and dangerous road services.

There has been several inches of snow with some schools in the Aberdeenshire area closed.

The bus involved in the crash on A90 was reportedly a Scottish Citylink service and images show the front of the vehicle badly damaged with the windscreen smashed.

A Stagecoach spokeswoman, reported pressandjournal.com, said: “We can confirm that one of our coaches was involved in a road traffic accident earlier this evening on the A90.

“Our first thoughts are with our driver and the passengers on board the coach, and we are giving our full support to the emergency services at the scene.”

There were delays for up to an hour with other Stagecoach buses operating in Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeen City Council has warned people to take care in the treacherous conditions.

It tweeted: "Please remember we can't be everywhere around the city.

"Due to the snow and road surface temperatures from -1.9C and -4C tonight, we are gritting the primary routes from about now and again from 4am tomorrow.

"The priority 1 pavements will also be gritted. Please take care."

The Mirror has contacted Stagecoach for a comment.
