Small plane crash-lands on 91 Freeway in Southern California; pilot and passenger escape uninjured

LOS ANGELES — A small Cessna plane crash-landed Tuesday on the 91 Freeway in Corona, and the pilot and only passenger were unharmed, authorities said.

According to the Corona Fire Department, the single-engine plane crashed on the freeway near Buena Vista Avenue around 12:31 p.m. Pacific time and went up in flames. The two people onboard were able to escape without injuries, authorities said. Fire crews quickly put out the fire.

California Highway Patrol Officer Keith Ballantyne told the Los Angeles Times that the plane was attempting to land at the Corona Municipal Airport and experienced a "possible engine failure," forcing it to make an emergency landing on the freeway.

The plane crashed into a Toyota pickup, Ballantyne said; the truck's passengers were unharmed.

The Federal Aviation Administration also responded to the incident and will be investigating the crash.
