Tragedy struck the southern Brazilian city of Gramado on Sunday when a small plane crashed into an urban center, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals. The incident also left over a dozen people injured, with 17 reported cases by the civil defense for Rio Grande do Sul, the region where Gramado is situated.
Most of the injured individuals were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation from the fire caused by the crash, as confirmed by the region's Public Security Department. The crash occurred shortly after the aircraft took off on Sunday morning, according to the National Civil Defense.
The plane's collision path included hitting the chimney of a building, a residence, and a furniture store, with debris also impacting an inn nearby. Distressing footage from the scene depicted flames engulfing a building and debris strewn across the ground, set against an overcast sky with fog enveloping the area.
Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the tragic incident, with concerns raised about the survival of those on board. Initial reports suggested that none of the occupants of the aircraft survived, as indicated by Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite.
While preliminary information pointed to the plane carrying 10 individuals, the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul has confirmed at least 10 fatalities, although it remains unclear if all victims were passengers. Governor Leite also mentioned that two of the injured individuals are in critical condition due to burns sustained during the crash.
Gramado, known as a small mountain resort popular among tourists, particularly during the Christmas season, offers numerous holiday attractions. The tragic plane crash has cast a shadow over the usually vibrant and festive atmosphere of the area, prompting an outpouring of condolences and support for the affected individuals and their families.
