Slow texters, topless pics and men who pay for Tinder Gold are just some of things that are turning people off on dating apps in Manchester. Finding love in this day an age can be hard especially with the prominence of dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge and Bumble.
Recent studies have estimated that over 323 million people worldwide use dating apps, which means they are choc-full of singles looking win your heart. But what are people looking for exactly? We took the streets of Manchester to ask residents what are their red and green flags are when swiping.
Many dating gurus say you should put as much info as possible in your bio, but Metri who works in Manchester says she prefers a less is more approach from profiles of potential suitors and said men who have too much going on in their profile is an ‘ick’.
Metri told the MEN: “Someone that takes Tinder a little bit too seriously. When they’ve got their Spotify, their favourite songs, I think that’s a bit of an ick for me.
“They just take it too seriously, you know like when lads have Tinder Gold? I just think that’s a big ick. Like why do you need Tinder Gold?
“A Green flag? someone that’s got a wide variations of pictures, someone who doesn’t just have pictures of them with their mates. Someone that shows a bit a variations like they’re fun, they go out, and show other aspects like they’re caring.”

Jacob who works in Manchester lucked out on dating apps and found his partner after just one week on Tinder. He says his short time on the app was quite ‘fun’. Speaking to the MEN he said: “A red flag for me was not having any information or maybe one photo, a very blank kind of mysterious profile.
“It would say they’re either not real or not willing to put that much effort into the whole experience.”
Dayna who is originally from the Caribbean is happily taken but says during her single days, men who used topless pictures in their profiles was a big turn off. She said: Too much naked pictures! it makes it seem like you are just sexual for them, they’re not really trying to date someone they’re just trying to have sex that’s it.
“I like humour, I’m guessing someone that’s funny, but also that has more morals, they know what they want, they know how to be gentlemen, chivalrous something like that.”
Unhappy with what Manchester had to offer, Dayna found love back home, she said: “I tried dating in Manchester once. I went on a first date and I didn’t feel like it so I messaged him saying I’m not really feeling it.
“He got mad at me and told me he was breaking up with me over text, after the first date. I was like, ‘okay, I’m not doing this again’, so my boyfriend is actually from the Caribbean that’s where I’m from. So I was like, I’m gonna just stay where I know I’m not going to get stalked or anything.”
Raj, a third year student said his major red flag was someone who took too long to respond to his texts speaking to the MEN he said: “I think it would have to be bad texter, bad replier, anybody who can’t reply. Big red flag for me.
“If it takes three to five working days for someone to reply, that’s always a red flag for me, I’m normally quick on the texting and replying so I need that.
“Green flag? someone who likes to cook, if we both have similar interests. I’m a big cook so that’s always helpful.”
While Hannah from Manchester’s biggest pet peeve was men who bragged about owning material possessions like car or a home: “It’s like they see what they own as being a big massive thing. A majority of people own a car.
“Green-flags is someone who respect their mum, if they’ve got a picture of their mum that’s always good.”
