AURANGABAD: The alleged slow progress of the Rs 1,680 crore water pipeline project in Aurangabad has evoked sharp reactions from the citizens.
One year of the total stipulated three years to complete the project is already over. In fact, the civic authorities themselves are at the forefront in criticising Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) for the slow pace of different works, including laying of the main water pipeline.
The senior officials from the water supply department, said, “While over 33% of the project period is over, MJP is yet to initiate the work of laying the main pipeline in 40km stretch from Jayakwadi dam. MPJ authorities can meet the deadline only if they lay at least a 50-meter pipeline per day, which looks like a stiff target.”
As per the work order issued by the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), MJP has to supply water to Aurangabad and fringe areas by February 3, 2024.
While the work of laying internal pipeline and construction of overhead tanks is in progress, the MJP authorities also need to remove a 2,000 mm diameter pipeline laid on a length of around 3.5 km by the previous firm that was outstated later to make way for a 2,500 mm diameter pipeline. The work of raising 15 of 53 overhead tanks is still in progress at many places, even after one year.
Among others, the residents of the Satara-Deolai area are furious over the alleged poor progress of the water pipeline project. “We live in a so-called metro where tap-water is still a distant dream for us. If some shame is left, the authorities and policymakers must ensure the new pipeline project sees the light of the day soon, to end our hardship,” Alka Kale, a resident, said.
When contacted, MJP executive engineer Ajay Singh said the work of laying the main pipeline is expected to begin shortly by April 10.
“The manufacturing of pipes for the 2,500 mm diameter pipeline is in full swing. We aim to accomplish the project before the stipulated deadline unless and until funding or other technical issues arise,” he said.
Earlier, AMC had roped in a private firm to lay a water pipeline from the Jayakwadi dam to the city to supply water. The PPP model of the firm faced charges of profiteering and corruption, following which it was sacked after a protracted legal battle and MJP was given fresh work order.
