Slovakian swimmer Tamara Potocka required medical attention after competing in the women's 200m Individual Medley heat at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Potocka, a 21-year-old athlete, experienced a sudden collapse after finishing seventh in her heat at the Paris La Defense Arena.
Following her race, Potocka collapsed at the side of the pool, prompting immediate medical intervention. She was fitted with a neck brace and an oxygen mask, placed on a stretcher, and carried from the pool deck for further evaluation.
It was later revealed that Potocka had suffered an asthma attack, a condition she had a documented history of. Asthma attacks can cause inflammation and constriction of the airways, making breathing difficult. Severe attacks can be life-threatening and require prompt medical treatment.
While the specific trigger for Potocka's asthma attack remains unclear, common triggers include allergies, exercise, stress, and certain weather conditions. Following oxygen therapy and assessment at a local hospital, Potocka was able to return to the Olympic Village later that day.
Despite her medical scare, Potocka's time of 2:14:20 was not fast enough to advance to the semifinals of the event. Nevertheless, her participation in the Olympics marked a significant achievement in her athletic career.
Competing in the Olympics is a rare opportunity that few individuals ever experience, highlighting Potocka's dedication and talent as a swimmer.
