Sligo Rovers swoop for Swedish defender as Bohemians land Paddy Kirk

Sligo Rovers have swooped for a Swedish right-back after Bohemians pounced for Paddy Kirk.

The Bit O’Red have wrapped up a deal for Johan Brannefalk, who signs from Norrby IF having been at Ljungskile and Trelleborg before that.

Brannefalk was also a youth player at Swedish giants Malmo and Sligo Rovers boss John Russell said: “He’s an attacking full back who will fit in perfectly.

“He possesses a great passing range and crossing ability and comes to us at a really good stage in his career.

“He has plenty of experience in the top two tiers in Sweden and I know he’s looking forward to this new challenge.”

Brannefalk, 24, said of his Showgrounds switch: ‘’I was flattered to hear Sligo Rovers were interested in me. It’s the perfect next step in my career.”

But Kirk has left Sligo Rovers for a return to Bohemians after two years away with Longford Town and the Bit O’Red.

Kirk, 24, is the Gypsies third signing ahead of 2023 following the return of Keith Buckley and his former Sligo team-mate Adam McDonnell.

Kirk said: “Having seen last year, I wanted to come back and try to make things better. I feel I’m coming back a better player and with a different mentality.”

New Gypsies boss Declan Devine said: “He’s a player I wanted to get in from the start. I want players who know the club and its values and Paddy fits that bill.”
