Sligo Rovers promise 'lengthy stadium bans' for fans alleged to have racially abused St Patrick's Athletic keeper David Odumosu

Both Sligo Rovers and St Patrick’s Athletic could face further action after crowd disturbances at half-time during their game at the Showgrounds on Friday.

While it is also alleged that Pat’s goalkeeper David Odumosu was subject to racist remarks from an individual in the crowd, objects were thrown from either end in the Jinks’ Avenue side of the ground, before a number of rival supporters clashed in the Sligo end.

It is not known whether referee John McLoughlin, his officials or any FAI representatives witnessed the incident.

But the second half was delayed when, it is understood, Odumosu and his Saints teammates reported the alleged comments to McLoughlin.

Speaking after the game Pat’s boss Tim Clancy said: “We want fans to come and enjoy football and we don't want any other nonsense going on.

“The support we've had all season, the numbers have been brilliant and that's what we encourage.

“There was an incident with Dave where remarks were made behind the goal. The lads are well-versed in the protocol.

"They notified the officials who notified Sligo who have dealt with it. We can't allow one idiot to tarnish their club.”

On Saturday afternoon, Rovers released a statement where the club said it had identified those who initiated the trouble and that they will face severe punishment.

It read: "Sligo Rovers are aware of incidents which took place at half time during last night’s 1-0 win over St Patrick’s Athletic at The Showgrounds.

"The incident has been captured on our CCTV cameras and we have identified a number of those involved and they will be subject to lengthy stadium bans.

"The Showgrounds is a welcoming, family friendly stadium and incidents like this will not be tolerated and those involved in such incidents are not welcome at our club.

"We wish to thank our supporters for their support of the club in 2022 and we will not allow our supporters’ fantastic reputation be tarnished by a minority of supporters who come to cause trouble."

On the pitch, it was Aidan Keena’s second half spot kick that decided a game in which the Inchicore side were denied on several occasions by Sligo’s veteran goalkeeper Richard Brush.

The result means Pat’s must rely on Derry City beating Shelbourne in the FAI Cup final, if they are to play European football next season.
