The UK has been enjoying some glorious sunshine and warm weather over the past month - but high temperatures can be uncomfortable for children.
This can become a problem at night when youngsters may find it difficult to nod off in the heat. However, there are ways to help little ones get some sleep.
Silentnight sleep expert, Sally Bonser, has shared her tips for parents this summer. We have outlined her advice below.

Prepare the room before bedtime
Sally says: "One of the most important tips for keeping your child cool is to prepare the room before they go to sleep. If their bedroom is already warm and toasty before they’re even in it, chances are they’re not going to get a good rest.
"Ensure the blinds and curtains are kept shut in the daytime to prevent the room from heating up when temperatures are high. Don’t be tempted to open the window during the daytime either, as this will only let the warm air (and pesky pollen particles) in."
Get the fan running before they go to bed
"Investing in a fan is a sure way to keep a room cool, especially during a heatwave," Sally advised. "Try to get the fan running and circulating cool air just before they go to bed, keeping the fan at a distance from where they sleep. This allows the room to cool down before they’re in it, meaning a noisy fan isn’t disrupting their slumber and you won’t worry about the room getting too cold if left on."
Consider changing pre-bedtime routine
"A lot of parents find they’re in the groove with the pre-bedtime routine but consider switching it up during the warmer months if needs be. Avoid any playtime or running around that might get them warm before bedtime and a cool (not cold) bath can help to prepare them for sleep."
Dress them in lightweight clothing
"What your child wears to bed can also impact their sleep quality during the summer. Ensure they’re dressed in lightweight and breathable clothing during the night to prevent overheating, as their usual bedtime pyjamas or sleepsuit may cause discomfort."
Prepare cot or bed for summer weather
“Dressing their cot or bed for summer will also help to keep them cool. If they are above 12 months old, switching their cot pillow to one with breathable properties can really help. The Silentnight Safe Nights Breathable Cot Bed Pillow is designed with unique mesh sides to increase airflow and create a more comfortable and fresh sleep environment," Sally added.
“For a younger baby who hasn’t quite graduated to a duvet, a lighter option will work well. The Silentnight Safe Nights Cellular Blanket is made from 100% super soft cotton and designed with a cellular construction to ensure breathability in the summer through both the day and night."
