Donald Trump criticised Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, labelling him a "disloyal disaster" and a "terrible guy" in a Truth Social post.
Trump's remarks were made as polls opened for Cassidy's contentious primary race, where he faces two other GOP candidates, including Trump-endorsed Representative Julia Letlow.
The criticism is believed to stem from Cassidy's vote to convict Trump during his 2021 impeachment trial over the January 6 Capitol attack.
Cassidy, one of seven GOP senators who voted for conviction, acknowledged the vote might be a liability but highlighted his legislative work with Trump.
If defeated, Cassidy would be the first incumbent senator in over a decade to lose a primary election.
