One of the easiest ways to blow cash at Christmas is by going overboard on decorations, cards and wrapping paper destined for the recycling bin.
But thankfully there are plenty of simple cutbacks to conserve your festive budget – starting with the all-important tree.
Oli Townsend, of MoneySavingExpert, says: “Buying a real 6ft Christmas tree can easily set you back about £50 but you can cut down the cost if you’re near an Ikea.
“Buy one of its £25 real Christmas trees and you’ll be given a £10 voucher to spend in store in the New Year.
“If you’d be spending the £10 there any- way, it’s effectively a £15 Christmas tree.”
If you need new baubles and are ready to wrap the gifts to go under that lovely new tree, try to hold off for a week or so. Oli says: “Mid-December is often the best time to pick up cheap decorations, crackers and wrapping paper.
“Over the last few years, we’ve seen big stores such as Argos, John Lewis and M&S slash prices – usually by up to 30% or 50% – so they can flog as much as they can before Christmas.”
Better still, get creative. Oli adds: “To save even more, have a go at making your own decorations such as cutting out snowflakes. A quick search online will bring up loads of crafty ideas.”
