SHIMLA: Police arrested a 23-year-old man in Una on Friday for allegedly killing a 15-year-old girl after she resisted his attempt to rape her on April 5.
Asif Mohammad (23), a resident of Amb, had entered the girl’s house when she was alone there on the pretext of collecting newspaper dues. On entering the houe, Asif tried to force himself upon the girl, but he slit her throat with a paper-cutter when the girl resisted his moves.
Police had been under pressure to solve the case. On coming to know of the arrest, angry protesters gathered outside the Amb police station on Friday.
Una SP Arijit Thakur Sen, while addressing with media, said during the course of investigation, it was found that there was no forceful entry into the house and no valuable had been stolen. He said this led to suspicion that the crime was committed by someone known to the girl. He said the police team collected and checked CCTV footage, after which Mohammad was arrested on Thursday.
He said during interrogation, the accused informed the police that he knew the girl for a year as he had done the plumbing work in the house. He said he also used to distribute newspapers in the area. The SP said when the accused tried to force himself upon the girl, she resisted his moves by pushing and slapping him.
