Sky true crime series to examine notorious murder of Edinburgh woman by her neighbour

An Edinburgh crime story will be showcased tonight on Sky Crime and will tell the tale of the murder and torture of Elaine Collie in 1999.

Elaine was 46 when she let her neighbour, John ‘Jock’ Reid, into her home. During a tragic and fatal ordeal, Reid hit Elaine over the head with a weapon and was tied her to the bed whilst being gagged with a towel.

The man went onto sexually assault Elaine and torture her through electrocution from an electric blanket and suffocating her.

During the torture, Reid forced Elaine to share her PIN number before he stole her jewellery as well as £350 from her bank account.

Reid was sentenced to life in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh in October 1999 after pleading guilty to Elaine’s murder and at the time it was recommended that he serve at least 15 years.

However Elaine’s family at the time believed that the sentence did not go far enough.

In 2021, Elaine's brother Fred and her nephew Jason, who works as a journalist in England, said that they had been notified of Reid's death.

At the time they said they were glad that he would not be able to harm any other victims.

Reid, who died in his early 60s, claimed he was drunk at the time and could remember nothing of the attack but said he felt remorse for his actions.

The show is called ‘Forensics: Catching The Killer’ and will air at 9pm on February 9 as well as at 11pm on Friday February 10 on Sky Crime.

Truenorth productions described the show: “Forensics: Catching The Killer explains in detail how the case was solved thanks to the in-depth forensic investigations.

“There will also be interviews from the former West Lothian and Borders detective and the forensic scientist who solved the case, as well as another of Reid’s victims – who was sexually assaulted by him as a teenager– and never-before-seen crime-scene photographs from Elaine’s flat.

“Every week, the series tells the stories of 12 murder cases – each one resolved thanks to forensic science and dedicated police investigation.”
