Sky News political editor Beth Rigby makes Queen blunder live on air

Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby made quite the blunder on Tuesday as she discussed Rishi Sunak becoming the new Prime Minister.

The former Chancellor was confirmed as the successor to Liz Truss, who lasted just 44 days in the role. In that time, the economy crashed.

Sunak was initially unsuccessful in a bid to become elected, with Truss winning the majority backing from the Conservative Party. However, he now becomes the first British-Asian person in history to become the UK's Prime Minister. He also became the youngest PM in over two centuries, aged 42.

To make the appointment official, Sunak met with King Charles III on Tuesday, as per the protocol.

However, as Rigby was reporting live on air as Sunak headed to Buckingham Palace for the reception with the King, she commented: "Rishi Sunak is about to become the Prime Minister. He’s just about to have his audience with the Queen."

Appearing to momentarily forget the death of the monarch on September 8 and not realising what she'd done, she continued: "I was writing about it last night. It feels like something out of the West Wing, doesn’t it? The drama, the plot twists, the infighting.

"I mean you couldn’t make it up in terms of art imitating life if you like or life rather imitating art."

It follows the BBC's mistake which described the new PM as a "c***" in an on-air graphic. While standing outside Number 10, a reporter asked people to describe Sunak in one word.

After a polling research company put a word cloud together with responses, the swear word was joined by the likes of t***t, sly and corrupt too on the graphic.

Slightly nicer words on show included clever, competent, smart and trustworthy.

While the new prime minister clearly has a number of doubters already, he's gained praise from none other than Piers Morgan.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, took to social media urging his followers to get behind the new man in charge.

Sharing a snap of a smiling Sunak with his family following the announcement, Piers tweeted: "Rishi Sunak is new UK Prime Minister. He’ll be the first British-Asian PM & first Hindu PM, and at 42, the youngest PM in modern times. I’ve backed @RishiSunak for a long time, think he’s the right guy for the job, and wish him every success."
