Skin expert issues olive oil warning

A skin expert has warned against the dangerous practice of using olive oil to tan skin as Britain basks in soaring temperatures. Applying oils such as coconut or olive is one way many Brits seek to darken their complexion during hot weather, while urban myths claim it holds benefits such as moisturising qualities.

However, failing to protect skin from harmful UV rays can lead to serious illnesses such as cancer. Sam Cinkir, CEO of leading skin and hair clinic Este Medical Group, said: “This week’s hot weather in the UK will mean lots of people will take the opportunity to catch some sun and perhaps try to tan their skin.

“It’s a common practice for people to use oils such as olive and coconut to help darken skin, but doing so could lead to serious health issues and should be avoided. Firstly, there is no such thing as tanning safely and you should consider carefully whether having a darker complexion for a few days is worth the potential damage it can do to your health.
