Skills, doles, poll promises, and representation: What matters to women voters in Bihar?

In this episode of Another Election Show, Newslaundry speaks to students of Patna Women’s College to understand their views on politics and the issues that matter to them in this election season in Bihar.

What emerged from the discussion is that Bihar’s young women are not looking for short-term financial aid. They want opportunities to build real skills. They believe that offering cash handouts or political promises alone cannot bring lasting change. For women’s progress, empowerment and education are key.

Many students pointed out that while governments distribute money during elections, they struggle to get even basic financial assistance like education loans due to excessive paperwork.

Some students said they now feel safer in Bihar than before, but others noted that harassment remains common outside college, raising concerns about women’s safety beyond campus.

The students also felt that election manifestos are released merely for show and poll promises rarely translate into action on the ground.
