Simon Jenkins and editors might suggest how readers know which MPs show “intelligence, radicalism and independence” (Labour to win, Tories to lose: but why can’t Britain have radical MPs free to speak their minds?, 1 July). There are sketches; otherwise, reports of what is said by MPs is sketchy at most.

• Surely a more fitting place than Donington for Matthew Flinders (Explorer ‘who named Australia’ to be reburied in Lincolnshire village where he was born, 30 June) would be in the churchyard of St Thomas in Charlton, London, where his widow, Ann, is buried. She was left on her own for many years while he explored the world.
