Justin Cary, the longtime bassist for Sixpence None the Richer, has died at the age of 50 after suffering a stroke.

The musician died Thursday, according to a statement shared on a GoFundMe page established to support Cary and his wife, Linda, during his hospitalization.

The fundraiser revealed that Cary had suffered a “serious stroke” last week and was being treated at Albany Medical Center in New York. He underwent two surgeries and remained in intensive care, where he was placed on a respirator in the days before his death.

“Justin passed peacefully this morning and Linda was next to him,” read a statement shared on the GoFundMe. “Please continue to pray and give strength during this very difficult time.”

Sixpence None the Richer lead singer Leigh Nash also announced the news on Instagram, sharing a carousel of photos of the bassist alongside the caption: “‘We sure had a great time’ is an understatement. Thank you, Justin. We love you forever. Please keep his dear Linda close to your hearts. She is our family. There’s never been anybody like Justin.”

The comments section of Nash’s post was flooded with messages of support.

“Sending love and praying for Justin’s family as well as the Sixpence family,” wrote one person. “Rest Easy Justin”

“Oh Leigh. I’m so sorry. Love Justin. Such a kindhearted man. I’m thinking of y’all and sending you big love. You’ll be in my prayers,” wrote another.

“This is so heartbreaking. For fans and moreso for family and friends. Thoughts and love to everyone,” shared a third.

Earlier this week, Nash, 49, has directed fans to the GoFundMe, writing on Instagram: “We love our brother so so much. Words don’t cover it. I know so many out there love him too.

“Saw his brilliance, second to NONE professionalism, class, humor (oh my lord the humor) wit, tough as an old boot as they say. Many more adjectives to describe him. Please pray for Justin and Linda.”

The GoFundMe has raised over $38,000 of its $40,000 target at the time of writing.

Sixpence None the Richer formed in the early 1990s and are best known for their 1997 hit, “Kiss Me.” The single went double platinum in the U.K. and U.S. and was nominated for a Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 42nd Grammy Awards.

The band began their 25th Anniversary Tour in October 2024 and are scheduled to tour the U.K. and Europe later this year.
